Stalker Sport 3 Connect

The Sport 3 Connect is Stalker's entry-level sports radar. It's the gun to buy when a whole team, a coaching staff or a scoreboard needs the reading, not just the person holding the gun.

What it is

Stalker Radar (Applied Concepts, Inc. of Richardson, Texas) has made police and sports radar for more than 40 years, and it calls its guns the overwhelming choice of professional athletes. The Sport 3 Connect replaces the Sport 2 as Stalker's lowest-priced sports gun. Stalker highlights:

• Dual active-speed display: peak velocity and over-the-plate speed at the same time.
• 300 ft range.
• Accurate Angle Technology: programmable correction so you can measure from up to 45° off-center, like from the dugout or beside the plate.
• Stalker Sport Radar app (iOS): up to 10 iOS devices at once, HD video with a velocity overlay, player stats and voice announcements.
• LED speed sign support, wireless. Stalker notes that only speeds above 30 mph show on a connected sign.
• Power: AA batteries (rechargeable or alkaline) or a USB-C external battery pack.
• Auto Mode for tripod use.

Who it's for

• High school, college and travel programs that want one trusted gun for the staff, with the readings on everyone's iPad.
• Programs that want a speed sign for the bullpen, a showcase or a fundraiser.
• Scouts and coaches who work from game distance, where 300 ft and angle correction matter.

Its limits

• Price. $799.99 is twice a Smart Coach before you add a sign.
• iOS only, as far as Stalker's page says.
• No spin rate. That's the Pro 3s.
• Accuracy is stated as ±3% of reading. At 80 mph that works out to about ±2.4 mph, so on paper it's not tighter than Pocket Radar's ±1 mph. Specs are stated differently, so don't read too much into either number.
• 1-year warranty, versus 2 years on Pocket Radar and on Stalker's Pro 3s.
• 25% restocking fee on returns at Stalker's store.
• Bigger than a Pocket Radar. It won't go in a pocket.

• vs Pocket Radar Smart Coach: half the price, pocket-size, works on Android, ±1 mph spec, 120 ft range. The Smart Display is the closest thing it has to a speed sign. Full comparison.
• vs Stalker Pro IIs / Pro 3s: the Pro guns add spin rate and longer range (Pro 3s: 500 ft velocity, 150 ft spin) for $2,899.99 and up.
• vs Sports Radar SR3600: the SR3600 also feeds a display (wired) and costs far less, but its baseball range is only about 60 ft.
• vs a used Stalker Sport 2 or Pro IIs: often less money on eBay, but no warranty and no app.
